More. An artists workplace // Prints

Tuesday, 30 June 2009

These are the beautiful result of a collaboration between Maria Alexandra Vettese (Port2Port Press) and Christopher David Ryan (My Little Underground).

'Staring at the Sun'
Two colour printing is so effective when done well... I love that the yellow areas of these are letter pressed and shift slightly in each edition. Really reminiscent of those funny little sun spots that get stuck in the corner of your eyes sometimes! Also loving these.. photographs by MAV with illustrations by CDR... what a talented team!
'Gone Fishing'
Both available from their site here

Can I Get a Witness?

Sunlight on Closed Lids*

Thursday, 25 June 2009

Sunlight on Closed Lids is the magic touch of the lovely Kate Holliday, in Edinburgh.
I first stumbled on her gorgeous cards in one of my favourite local shops and was struck by the bold hand-drawn illustration, typography and vintage colour combinations... it's so rare to see instances where all of this has been considered as one complete package... & all the bits mesh so beautifully. The designs remind me of being a child and growing old all at the same time and leave such an innocent and happy mark.... Thanks so much to Kate for sharing them and may they take you great places!!

You can buy the cards online - or in person- at the lovely The Red Door Gallery shop (where Kate also works)

DIY Postcard Journals via Design* Sponge

Great idea here on the Design* Sponge website... making little books out of old postcards... would also be great using cards - wouldn't have a back cover but would be bigger?!

Print of the Day > Emma Magenta

By one of my favourite illustrators and one of many of Third Drawer Down's lovely tea towel artprints...

Available here from Third Drawer Down (AU$40)

An Apple a Day

Really love the whole idea of this poster by VikDesign. I'm always sticking apple stickers on the back of my hand and then making little white sticky spots when I eventually remember to take them off... now you can keep those colourful little blighters all together and at the same time make sure you eat your one a day (and make sure you're mixing up varieties too)! genius... would love one at my work. What's more it's letterpressed and beautifully elegant.

Size: 18" x 23"
Inks: Pantone 7532U and a light varnish
Paper: Strathmore Writing Wove Platinum White 130# Cover
Available from etsy (US$25)

Office of the tooth fairy

These letterpressed tooth fairy packs make me really wish that I still had all my baby teeth. What a stylish little person must own these!

A Wave of Delight

Wednesday, 24 June 2009

I'm smitten by this new book by Suzy Lee. Isn't it completely lovable?! It's the story of a gutsy little girl who takes on the sea, only to be put in her place when it plays back. Not a single word is on the pages except the title on the cover, so it's pictures make it anyone's story. Blue and black are the sole two colours (and all that are needed)... and to top it off, it's got a happy ending! Whats not to love?

Print of the Day > Paola Zakimi

'Sofi and the Fish', from etsy for US$20 (originally a watercolour)

Nothing Elegant // Etsy shopping

Saw this cute-as-punch polaroid box on Black*Eiffel so went to check out the Nothing Elegant etsy shop it came from... UH oh! too many nice (and largely unnecessary) things for one stationary-holic to resist! Here's a little selection of the treats that Korea can bring (there are 800+ in the shop)

1. Polaroid box
2. Rabbit Post-it Sticky note set
3. Thankyou Sticker set
4. 3-D Hot Air Balloon card
5. Vintage Paris Postcard set
6. Accordian File organiser (pocket size)

Jurianne Matter

I first saw the paper lanturns by Dutch artist Jurianne Matter over at Bloesem & then when I went to her website I found these adorable paper boats too! They remind me of dutch folk art, in a really innocent and stylish way! & I also love that each one has a place to write her name (the boat that is - they're always 'she' aren't they?) on the hull.

If you don't speak dutch, you can email her instead!

Sneezy slice of summer

These tissue boxes on TheDieline blog made me smile!

As did the sliced bread notebook (12 slices, one for each month!)

Stripey paper straws

Tuesday, 23 June 2009

I've developed abit of an obsession for paper straws of late. Had a wave of nostalgia for milkshakes with soggy edged (but beautifully striped so it didn't matter) straws poking out of them... My rummaging on the Internet has proved worthwhile and i've found a few suppliers if anyone else feels that wave too?! (contact via email):
US - kikkerland, Europe - daskas, UK - addject
(sorry, none for oz as yet)

Print of the Day > Blanca Gomez

It's abit cheaty, but actually there are two prints today...
couldn't pick my favourite you see!'Monsieur under the rain' & 'Fete Print'
Both are available from Blanca's lovely shop The Shiney Squirrel
Also see more work at her website Cosa Minimas (means 'tiny things' in spanish)

ANONthology

Picked up this good-lookin (& free) literary magazine in our local bookshop yesterday. It turns out it is produced by the 4th Estate publishing house and is full of short stories by Pulitzer writers, Booker nominees, Orange winners and other such esteemed authors... only all the stories are written anonymously... the idea being that the authors name doesn't affect the way you read the story. It's an interesting idea (and very clever marketing!)
Click on the images for a closer look at the words...

If you enter the competition to guess which author wrote which story, you can win one of their limited edition (25th anniversary) books. Each cover doubles as a poster which is a great gimmick... & I do so love those kind of things!

{1} A year of Magical thinking, Joan Didion {2} The Shipping News, Annie Proulx {3} The Corrections, Jonathan Franzen {4} The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly, Jean-Dominique Bauby {5} Half of the yellow sun, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

See more spreads from Anonthology and enter the competition here

Thankyou Kluster!

Monday, 22 June 2009

My lovely friends at the Kluster magazine blog have shouted sweet nothings from across the seas and a salute to their talents goes right back at 'em...
Kluster is the arts, Kluster is bands, Kluster is fashion on skaters, Kluster is personas, Kluster is creative culture. Kluster is Sydney, Melbourne, London, New York. Kluster is old-school techniques in an innovative medium.

The blog is just the beginning of such great heights... their online magazine delves deep into all-that-is-anything-worth-knowing on the streets and is brought to you by a team of great writers, photographers and artists. Get issue 5 here (or better still, sign up to their mailing list and be sent every new edition hot off the keyboard press)
We love Kluster too!

Cards touched by human hands

The 'camping' series of greeting cards from Norweigen duo, Darling Clementine is raw with handmade love. Beautiful vintage bird and face cutouts, each with a tale to tell (& i'm a big fan of the grid paper, obviously!)

and they even make origami envelopes!
