National Stationery Show Teasers

Tuesday, 7 May 2013

As I start to see some trickles of goodness set for the National Stationery Show (19-22nd May), I turn a little bit green... but with a healthy serving of excitement on the side. These two sneaky peaky previews are already setting the bar pretty high.

Hammerpress's hand drawn badge series is all kinds of fabulous...

And as usual Hello Lucky! is cute and fun and pretty near perfect...

Hello Lucky for NSS2013

Looking forward to seeing more during and after the show from those lucky enough to be rolling in the papery aisles.

Hello Lucky, Thanks, for NSS2013

Beci Orpin & Kat Mcleod // Hidden Place

Thursday, 18 April 2013

If I was in Melbourne right now, I'd be trying to get my eyeballs close to this amazing collaborative exhibition that is taking place. Two of my favorite Australian artists, Beci Orpin and Kat Macleod, have joined forces to spread a little bit of illustrative magic.

The collaboration was a suggestion by their mutual agent, Jacky Winter Group who introduced them for the purpose of the exhibition. Their early working process as told by Beci is so gorgeous...

kat and i started by sending pictures of things that were inspiring us to each other, from that we decided on a theme. then we drew up 2 lists of words, relating to the theme and also things we both liked to draw, and then divided the words in 2 jars and picked them out randomly. these random picks became the titles of each piece of work.

They each began five works before swapping to complete the others' unfinished work. Such a great meeting of minds! I can't wait to see more images from those lucky enough to have seen them.

Go see the exhibition in real life at Lamington Drive Gallery, Melbourne. (It's on until 25th May)

The wonderful mind (and hands) of Oliver Jeffers

Tuesday, 2 April 2013

Childrens book illustrator extraordinaire Oliver Jeffers is currently having an exhibition in Brooklyn (*sigh* oh, to own a rocket ship!) and it looks pretty excellent. Collaborating with jewellery designer Aaron Ruff, the exhibition is playful in the way it looks at natures competition and natural order (through the deptiction of non-agressive animals in battle)
"This project involves a fictitious boy and his fascination with battle, with natures quest for the domination of the biggest and best, and shows the sensitivities of a young mind exploring the world inside his own head"

I really love this mans illustrations. I bought his first couple of children's books just because I liked the illustrations... and now that I have a child to actually read them to, there's no reason not to buy the whole set, right?!

A4 Paper Festival... almost here!

Wednesday, 25 May 2011

Am very much looking forward to next week as the A4 paper festival is coming to Sydney town.  I talked about the Paper Convention launch awhile back and now the festival is really happening. HOORAY! The exhibition opening is on Tuesday night at the Paper Mill and features some supremely talented artists.

Doubley exciting is that there are side events a plenty too. It'd be great to go to them all but that'd be just greedy... I have however just snapped up some tickets to a talk by Japanese paper extraordinaire, Yoshinobu Miyamoto...

... and a workshop run by Bianca Chang which is pretty darn exciting also. I am hoping to come out with some wonders just like hers (yeah right!!)

A giant congrats to Lisa for making such a great thing happen in little old Oz... I salute you from my little paper boat!

Paper Convention Collective... is taking off!

Thursday, 2 December 2010

Finders Keepers markets are always a reason to make my toes tingle... and this weekend not only are they having their fabulous annual Christmas markets in Sydney, but also it's the launch of the wonderfully exciting Paper Convention Collective!

The brainchild of the lovely and talented Lisa from Lox&Savvy, the paper convention is an event scheduled for next year with all kinds of paper based brilliance set to be on show. So in anticipation, tomorrow night and all day saturday at the carriageworks, there will be paper workshops galore (see the schedule here) I'm lucky enough to be helping Lisa out so do come by and say hi... and see what the beebuzz is all about!

p.s. isn't the Finders Keepers flyer below divine too... illustrated by Jefferton James

50 Books/50 Covers of 2008

Thursday, 12 November 2009

Wish I had been in San Francisco last week for this exhibition of the AIGA 50 books/50 covers.
So many great books (happy to see the multiple McSweeneys editions in the mix) which are most definately testament to the fact that people still love books as tactile beings and not horrible screens of text! (not sure if you can tell but the thought of e-books makes me very sad) See all the judges final selections here. The exhibition runs till 20th November if you're in the area? (Its at Chronicle books HQ)

Mariscal // Design Museum Exhibition

Wednesday, 28 October 2009

I don't know alot about Spanish designer Mariscal (yet) but his exhibition at the Design Museum in London looks so bright and fun and can't wait to go see it/play in it this weekend... He is responsible for the Barcelona Olympic mascot and also recognise him from this cookbook cover too... but his wealth of work looks to be spilling over the edges with character in this space so am hoping to discover many more treasures. There is a blog all about the exhibition and some great images of the setting up of it too... & aren't all these letters brilliant...
